Description
Our “Mama Assata” graphic is inspired by Assata Shakur — political activist, author, and step-aunt of late rapper Tupac Shakur. In 1970, Assata Shakur became acquainted with the Black Panther Party (BPP) in Oakland where she helped organize community education programs, demonstrations, and political rallies. She also helped organize and staff the Free Breakfast Program for community children, oversaw the planning of a free clinic, and coordinated member health care, first aid, and community outreach. Born Joanne Deborah Bryon, she changed her name to Assata (“she who struggles”) Shakur (“the thankful”) as a reflection of her new political consciousness and her commitment to her African heritage
